FHS Organizes a Field Visit to Displacement Centers

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Al Maaref University (MU) organized a field visit for nursing students to a number of displacement centers in Beirut. The initiative took place over two weeks during July 2026 and was supervised by the Training Materials Coordinator in the Nursing Sciences Department, Mrs. Roula Hallal.

This training aims to enable students, prior to graduation, to apply the principles and foundations of national and international healthcare within the community in which they live, in accordance with professional standards. It also seeks to strengthen students’ role in responding to the health needs of their surrounding environment. The training location is selected annually based on community priorities; this year, the choice was displacement centers due to the urgent need to support displaced people.

During the field visits, third-year nursing students carried out a range of health activities in several secondary schools in Beirut. These activities included:  

• Providing health education on the risks of smoking,  

• Measuring blood pressure for elderly individuals and for those with chronic conditions,  

• Checking blood glucose levels (diabetes screening),  

• Assisting the doctor on duty at the displacement center with dispensing medication to displaced persons.

The program also included a brief course in cardiopulmonary first aid for emergency cases, delivered by the supervising instructor, Jawad Harashi. The session focused primarily on how to use the automated external defibrillator (AED), helping to improve students’ readiness to respond to emergencies in the field.
